Column of the Holy Trinity in Olomouc, UNESCO monument

Entry Description

The Column of the Holy Trinity in Olomouc is a monument built to the glory of God between 1716 and 1754. Its main purpose was a lavish celebration of the Catholic Church and faith, partly prompted by a feeling of gratitude for the end of the plague that struck Moravia between 1714 and 1716. Since that all the artists and craftsmen who worked on the column were Olomouc citizens, the construction of the column was also understood as an expression of local patriotism.

The 32-meter-high column is the highest sculpture in the Czech Republic, and it also includes a small chapel. Since 1995, it has been a national cultural monument together with the Marian Column and the Baroque fountains, and in 2000, as one of the masterpieces of the Central European Baroque, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
